5 Surprising Genetically Modified Foods.
So what are genetically modified organisms ?
GMO`s are animals or plants that have sustained a procedures where scientists adjust their genes with DNA from other different species of bacteria, viruses, living organisms, to get wanted traits such as tolerance of pesticides or better fighting to diseases.
Some examples of food that are genetically modified:
Hawaiian Papaya trees in the 1990s were affected by the ringspot virus which destroyed approximately half of the crops in the state. Scientists in 1998 grown a transgenic fruit known as Rainbow papaya, which is resistant to this virus. Today, 77 percent of the papaya crop grown in Hawaii is Genetically Engineered (GE).
RGBH, or Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, is a genetically engineered form on a naturally exist hormone injected into dairy cows in order to increase milk production. This kind of GE milk is banned in Canada, Australia , New Zealand and in the European Union. Many milk brands that are RGBH-free, label their milk as such. However on the other hand, nearly 40 percent of our dairy products, including cheese, ice cream and much more, contains this hormone.
- Corn on the cob
Nearly 90 percent of the corn grown in USA is genetically modified. Most of that corn is used for feeding the animals and the rest become eventually part of the processes foods. Sweet corn , the thing that you grill or steam on the barbecue and eat on the cop , was free of GMO until last year when Monsanto appear in public with their new and first GE harvest of sweet corn.
- Squash and zucchini
Largest amount of squashes on the market are GMO-free. However, nearly 25.000 acres of straightneck, crookneck and zucchini have been genetically modified to be resistant to viruses.
- “All Natural” foods
You must be very careful of this label of you want to avoid genetically modified foods. Today there is no defined definition of what is natural food.
